A Discussion Group led by Creina Mansfield and Barry Wood
£70 for six sessions (October 2009 to March 2010)
Held at the Friends’ Meeting House, 6 Mount Street, Manchester
Creina Mansfield is a writer and teacher of English Literature, with a special interest in the Novel and narratology. She has recently presented a ten week course 'Aspects of the Novel' . Barry Wood, who will take the second session, has taught modern literature for many years, writes on modern poetry and translation for PN Review and is currently honorary fellow in The Writing School at MMU.
October 10th: The White Tiger, Aravind Adiga
A chatty murderer exposes the underbelly of India's tiger economy.
November 7th: The Gathering, Anne Enright
Conjures up the mother and father of all Irish families.
December 12th: The Cellist of Sarajevo, Steven Galloway
The story of four regular people and their response to war and hate. The cellist is the character who unites the story threads.
January 16th (Please note change of date): The Bookseller of Kabul, Åsne Seierstad
A family at war - with itself.
February 13th: The Visible World, Mark Slouka
A clandestine love affair is kindled during the dark days of the Nazi occupation of Prague.
Its consequences reverberate through the decades and across thousands of miles, with tragic results.
March 13th: Everything is illuminated, Jonathan Safran Foer
A tale that depicts, with riveting intensity and originality, a young Jewish American writer's search for his family's European roots.
